Absolutely not. Capoeira is for everybody, and every body. While we may look and feel different doing it, and certain people may be able to catch on to the language and music more easily, and/or perform certain movements with more ease or precision, the purpose of training is ultimately liberation. Personal mastery and meaning within the art is developed over time, depending on what one puts into it. Created by enslaved Africans in colonial Brazil, transformed in modern times in myriad ways, and now practiced all over the world, this art form is a testament to the power and potential of the human spirit, body and mind. Our classes strive to be accessible, and we place great emphasis on safety, as well as respect for oneself, for others and for the art itself.
Capoeira is many things. A quick or simple response to this questions might be "a Brazilian martial art that involves music". While capoeira itself is not a dance, there are traditional dances associated with it that are often practiced at capoeira schools, such as Samba, Maculelê and Puxada de Rede, all connected to its colonial roots and the geography of its origin (Salvador, Bahia, Brazil). One song we practice relates the following about capoeira,
“Capoeira é defesa e ataque, a ginga do corpo e a malandragem”
Translation: Capoeira is defense and attack, the ginga of the body (swaying movement like a boat in the sea that forms the base for all other movements), and malandragem (impossible to translate, but this means something like the trickery, savvy, awareness of danger, quick decision making, understanding of interconnectedness of action, potential action and inaction, etc. that is needed to survive). To me (Ro), this describes the essence of the art, as well as the stories and rhythms themselves contained within the music and movements.
Capoeira can be a life-changing, transformative experience! It can also be a source of exercise, community, camaraderie, music, learning history, self-defense, building confidence, flexibility, skill, empathy and awareness, improving language-learning abilities and cross-cultural interaction, and much more.
